GLP-1s: What You Should Actually Know About These Medications
Updated: Oct 7
You've probably noticed that GLP-1 medications seem to be everywhere right now.
Semaglutide.
Tirzepatide.
Wegovy.
Zepbound.
Retatrutide.

Some people call them a game changer. Others think they're the easy way out. So what's actually true?
As usual, it's a little more complicated than either side makes it sound.
First, They're Not Fake
GLP-1 medications can produce significant weight loss. They can also provide important health benefits for appropriate patients. They're legitimate medical treatments, not just another fitness trend. For someone who has struggled with obesity or significant weight management challenges, they can be a very useful tool.
But there's something I think gets overlooked in a lot of the conversation. Losing weight isn't necessarily the same thing as improving your body composition.
Here's the Part I Care About Most
When someone loses a significant amount of weight, we want as much of that loss as possible to come from body fat rather than lean tissue. Lean mass can be lost during any significant weight-loss phase, including when someone is using a GLP-1 medication.
That's where the fundamentals we've been talking about for the last few weeks become even more important.
Protein.
Resistance training.
Adequate nutrition.
Consistency.
The medication may help with appetite and weight loss. However, it doesn't replace the need to take care of the muscle underneath that weight.
Potential Downsides of GLP-1s
The most common side effects are gastrointestinal. These can include nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, constipation, and abdominal discomfort. There are also more serious potential risks and medication-specific considerations that should be discussed with a qualified medical professional.
There's another important question: What happens when you stop taking it? Weight regain after discontinuing GLP-1 medications is a real consideration. This is something anyone considering long-term treatment should discuss with their medical provider.
If you're getting a GLP-1 through a clinic, make sure you're dealing with a legitimate medical provider. Understand exactly what you're being prescribed. The FDA has also raised concerns about unapproved or improperly compounded versions of these medications.
Are GLP-1s Good or Bad?
I don't think that's the right question. The better question is: Can they be a useful tool for the right person? If someone uses one, how do we make sure they're also taking care of their health, strength, and muscle?
That's where I think fitness professionals can play an important role. If someone is losing 30, 40, or 50 pounds, I don't just want to celebrate the number on the scale.
I want to know:
How much strength did they maintain?
How much muscle did they maintain?
Are they eating enough protein?
Are they still resistance training?
Are they building habits they can maintain long-term?
Because ultimately, the goal shouldn't just be to weigh less. It should be to be healthier, stronger, and more capable.
The Importance of a Holistic Approach
When considering GLP-1 medications, it's crucial to adopt a holistic approach. This means focusing not just on weight loss but also on overall health and fitness.
Nutrition Matters
Nutrition plays a vital role in any weight loss journey. It's not just about cutting calories. It's about fueling your body with the right nutrients. Ensure you're consuming enough protein to support muscle maintenance. Incorporate a variety of foods to get all the vitamins and minerals your body needs.
Stay Active
Incorporating regular physical activity is essential. Resistance training should be a key component of your fitness routine. It helps preserve lean muscle mass while losing weight. Aim for at least two to three sessions of resistance training each week.
Build Sustainable Habits
Focus on building habits that you can maintain long-term. Quick fixes rarely lead to lasting results. Instead, aim for gradual changes that fit into your lifestyle. This could mean meal prepping, finding enjoyable workouts, or setting realistic goals.
Seek Professional Guidance
Consider working with a fitness or nutrition coach. They can provide personalized guidance tailored to your unique needs and goals. A professional can help you navigate the complexities of weight loss and health improvement.
Conclusion
In conclusion, GLP-1 medications can be a valuable tool for some individuals. However, they should not be viewed as a standalone solution. Weight loss is just one piece of the puzzle.
To truly transform your health, focus on nutrition, exercise, and sustainable habits. Remember, it's not just about the number on the scale. It's about becoming a healthier, stronger, and more capable version of yourself.
